I've decided to get a new sack for my Pennine Way trip in June. 40 ltr should be about the right size for waterproofs, change of clothes, water, maps and the various things I need with me. I'd like it to be light but robust and reasonably waterproof although I could use a rucksack cover.

    What does anyone recommend?

Highlander Starav is cheap, 35L, waterproof, comes with a hi vis waterproof cover, is very well made for the price. Its popular in the SAR community as it punches seriously above its price. Theyre also equipped to take a hydration bladder up to 5L.

Thanks Drago - I’ll take a look at that one.

I recommend looking at the Berghaus Freeflow. I've abused mine for years and have one wrecked zip now. I've tried the latest range and will be updating soon.
Comes with rain cover, hydration bladder compatability. The freeflow back system is excellent and offers real adjustability.

Osprey. Nice and trendy to go with your new jacket!

    They're also quite good.
